Steve Jobs: Don’t Rest In Peace

Even though I knew it was immanent, it’s still hard to believe. It was immanent, because there was no way Steve would leave his position of innovation unless he absolutely had to. And that would mean the worst.

You could see his delight in the implementation of design, form and function. When he stepped down from Apple, it was the end. Like a person giving up on life itself. Steve was driven. An unflinching force moving as fast as his imagination would allow.

The well-wishes have been pouring in on Facebook, Twitter and more: Rest In Peace.

Im sorry, but thats just wrong. It goes against the grain. That’s like inviting Gordon Ramsay to McDonald’s, or asking Sammy Hagar to play Mozart. Rest in peace? The man’s job wasn’t done. By his nature, it would have never been done. There would always be “one more thing.”

I’m really disturbed by this “rest.” its way too final. Not for Mr. Jobs, but for us. Steve wouldn’t have wanted to rest, and he wouldn’t have wanted Apple to rest. We must all continue to “think different.” While it’s bad grammar, it’s a great example. Innovation must continue. Let’s hope that Apple doesn’t rest on it’s laurels, Steve’s business progeny step up to continue the fight, and we Remember Steve’s example of never resting in his search for the next big thing.

The Many Faces of Mort Monday

It happens with every comic strip – take a look at an early Peanuts, Garfield or Doonesbury – things change. The artist develops his or her style, things begin to flow better, or the artist simply doesn’t like the current stylistic direction, and starts anew.

Mort is no different, except for the fact that most of his changes occurred over a twenty-year period, all before he ever saw the light of day!

Here’s a look at all the major contenders for the look of Mort, from the childish to the more cultured:

FIRST MORT

Not exactly a shining example of artistic bravado. Yes, the first attempt looked as childish as the age of the creator!

SHORT MORT

Here’s a bit more of a conscious decision for style: some thicker lines, more angles and a simplified look.

TALL MORT

New and Improved! Like Short Mort, only – taller. Also includes a V6 engine and power windows…

CRICKET MORT

While this version is closer to the current version that made it to the website, the sharp angles of the jacket give him a look that reminds me of cricket from an early Warner Brothers cartoon.

MORT SO 5 MINUTES AGO

Here’s the way mort started on the website. Why “so five minutes ago?” because this week already sports an updated version of Mort!

MORT SO 5 SECONDS AGO

Here’s the current Mort. And yes, he’s still evolving, along with my studies and abilities.

This may make one ask the question, “why make changes in the first place?” after all, why not get it to where you like it, then start up a comic strip?

I don’t know about anyone else, but if I waited for just the right Mort or for my abilities to finally be up to the point that I would like them – Mort Monday would still be in a drawer in my desk, filed away in a yellow binder that said simply, “Mort.” Too often we think we’re just not ready, to the point of never being ready. If I didn’t start somewhere, I simply wouldn’t have started!

He may still be evolving, and I may still be learning – but now He’s actually out there for people to enjoy.

Hopefully, we’ll all grow together!

Mort’s New Home On The Web!

Vince & Mort

Mort was just too cool to share the spotlight.

Vince & MortMort was a feeling a bit cramped over on VinceUnleashed.net – so I decided to give him his own little space on the web – A place he can call home – even though he really doesn’t have one (perhaps he actually owns everything, and chooses to walk-about?).

Right now it’s a bit plain and generic, but that will improve over time. The website will grow as the Mort Monday strip grows – there’s much developing behind the scenes! In fact, next week’s strip will show the benefits not only of Mort’s author getting in some practice time at the drawing easel, but actually cracking open a “how to draw comics” book! I believe you’ll find the difference striking.

No, I’m not a Schulz or a Watterson – but good ol’ Mort has a few tricks up his sleeve. When I initially sat down way back in the 80′s (dang, time flies…), I scribbled down many pages of notes, and almost 60 complete strips!

Of course, times have changed, and with my maturing the strip has matured – even before it ever officially began. Over the years, I pulled the notes out of a drawer, made a few more, wished my drawing was up to snuff with what I wanted to present, and put it all back in the drawer.

Two months ago, I pulled the notes out one more time – and this time, they stayed out. The difference between then and now? I’ll get into that in a later post – I’ve taken up enough of your time, here – feel free to look around, kick the tires, look over the four strips currently up, and let people know about some wacky guy who wants to draw a comic strip about a man with no home – does it mean he has no hope? We’ll see!

If you can, please spread the word! Share the strips, post and pages that will be appearing over the next few weeks – This is a “shoestring budget” for the time being, and I can use as many foot soldiers as I can to get Mort Monday to the masses. Here’s a run-down of important links:

You can find Mort not only at http://www.MortMonday.net, but on Facebook, at http://www.Facebook.com/MortMonday, and you can even follow Mort himself on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/MortMonday – he really does have an interesting thought or two each day!

Be sure to swing by each Monday to see the newest Mort Monday adventure!
